General: Overview & Introduction

Overview

The MCCCD Center for Curriculum and Transfer Articulation has developed the Curriculum Procedures Handbook to provide information on the development, processing and implementation of curriculum. The college Curriculum Development Facilitator and the college Curriculum Technician are the college curriculum personnel who are in constant contact with the MCCCD Center for Curriculum and Transfer Articulation personnel. This partnership supports the processing of curriculum between and among colleges and the district office.

The Handbook does not attempt to define or describe the college operational procedures but provides guidelines for college staff to follow in the development, processing and implementation of curriculum. The procedures are intended for use under normal operating circumstances. Other circumstances may arise that, in management’s judgment, require a different approach. Management reserves the right to take a different course of action when appropriate.

The Handbook also includes information on different resources used in the various stages of the curriculum processes. An example of this is the Curriculum Systems section of the Handbook which details Maricopa's use of technology to help store the curriculum information as well as help process the information from college to district.

There are many individuals from the colleges and the district office who are involved in the curriculum processes and support the various curriculum activities.

The Vice President of Academic Affairs is responsible for the coordination of development efforts at the campus level.

The Vice President of Academic Affairs, in consultation with the Occupational Dean, provides the guidance for the development and approval of occupational curricula.

The college Curriculum Design Facilitators (CDFs) works in a supportive role with the faculty member initiating the curricular proposal.

The Vice President of Academic Affairs involves other college staff in the development process as deemed appropriate. These individuals also help contribute to refining the curriculum processes, which are detailed in the Curriculum Procedures Handbook.

The MCCCD Center for Curriculum and Transfer Articulation revises the Handbook annually or on an as needed basis. A subcommittee or ad hoc work groups of the District Curriculum Committee are responsible for reviewing recommended modifications to the Handbook and submitting their recommendations to the District Curriculum Committee. This effort is facilitated through the MCCCD Center for Curriculum and Transfer Articulation.

INTRODUCTION

The Curriculum Procedures Handbook is designed both as a user's guide and a repository of approved curricular standards and processes for faculty and other individuals who are responsible for processing curriculum proposals. Although many if not most of the initiatives for curriculum change come from the faculty, the responsibility for moving these initiatives through the necessary channels is an administrative one.

This Handbook should provide users with a broad perspective of the curriculum process and insight into how various curriculum proposals relate to each other. Information on the development of curriculum proposals, processes in place to move the proposal through various approval stages and information on other related procedures and support functions are found in the Handbook.
