Incomplete curriculum proposals will not be included as agenda items for the District Curriculum Committee but will be returned to the initiating college by the MCCCD Curriculum Office.
When preparing course proposals:
Form
Ensure that a current version of the proposal form is being used and provide all required information.
Verify the effective term(s)
Ensure the proposal is accompanied by the Vice President of Academic Affairs’ approval indicating that the proposal has been approved by the college administration and is ready for processing to District.
Course Elements
Check availability of course number for new courses and modified course number.
Check that cross-referenced courses, if included, are clearly delineated on the proposal.
Ensure the description is in phrases, not complete sentences, description relates to course titles, differentiates course from other apparently similar courses, and is reflected in the course outline.
Ensure the course pre-/corequisites are clear, follow the established format for development of pre-/corequisites.
Check same disciplines and related discipline(s) to determine whether or not similar courses exist.
Check courses in the same discipline for consistency in the language used in the course pre-/corequisites.
Ensure use of Roman numerals in the title follow the standards defined in the Handbook. If submitting a course with a Level I in the title, other subsequent levels should be submitted at the same time.
Effect of Proposed Action on Existing Curriculum
Determine the effect of the proposed action on existing curriculum by using the resources available via SIS and the curricular information on the MCCCD Curriculum Office website.
Proposal
Ensure that a proposal summary has been included in the total college proposal packet and that the Instructional Council(s) have been sent copies of the proposals. Instructional Councils receive OPMs as informational items.
Include all pages to the proposal and verify that the format for identifying continuation pages has been followed.
Ensure course need addresses relevant issues.
Check that course competencies describe student behavior, are measurable, are clearly related to course content, and follow established format regarding reference to points on the content outline.
Follow-up On Delayed Instructional Council Responses And Edits To The Proposal
Ensure that council evaluations are sent to the MCCCD Curriculum Office if they are received after the proposal packet is sent to the District.
Verify that all edits were made to the college proposal record. These changes may occur as the proposal is processed internally at the college or are a result of changes submitted to District, changes made by District Curriculum Committee or the Governing Board.
