College Curriculum Personnel Checklist for Analyzing Program Proposals

The checklist for analyzing program proposals by the college curriculum personnel is designed to identify inconsistencies in course proposals before they are presented to the College Curriculum Committee.

Incomplete curriculum proposals will not be included as agenda items for the District Curriculum Committee but will be returned to the initiating college by the District Curriculum Coordinator.

When preparing program proposals:

Form

Ensure that a current version of the proposal form is being used and provide all required information.

Verify the effective term.

Ensure the proposal includes the Vice President of Academic Affairs’ approval indicating that the proposal has been approved by the college administration and is ready for processing to District.

Program Elements

Ensure that all required information on the program has been provided and follows the standards defined in the Handbook.

Verify award types, titles, and major codes and other program elements against the current program version on the District Curriculum Office website.

Analyze Pre-Corequisite Flowchart checking for hidden prerequisites and ensure that the pre-/corequisites listed are current.

Check requirements to ensure that the program contains current data on courses, and that the courses are valid (contained in the CIA or MCCCD Curriculum Office website as open-ended courses).

Verify General Studies requirements against current General Studies requirements for Associate of Applied Science degrees.

Check that cross-referenced courses, if included, are clearly delineated on the proposal.

Verify total credit hours for the program.

Effect Of Proposed Action On Existing Curriculum

If deleting a program, clarify status of remaining certificates or degrees for those programs which have several degrees/certificates in the same area

If deleting a program using a unique prefix, clarify the status of the courses using that prefix.

Check for utilization of all courses within the program prefix for those programs specific to that institution

Proposal

Ensure that a proposal summary has been included in the total college proposal packet and that the Instructional Council has been sent copies of the proposals for evaluation or information.

Include all pages to the proposal and ensure that the format for identifying continuation pages has been followed.

Verify that the New Occupational Program Early Alert is on file at the District Curriculum Office for proposed new occupational programs.

Ensure that the changes stated on the Summary of Changes are actually listed on the proposal.

Check that program competencies follow established format defined in the Handbook.

Follow-Up On Delayed Instructional Council Responses and Edits to the Proposal

Ensure that Instructional Council evaluations for new programs are sent to the District Curriculum Office if they are received after the proposal packet is sent to the District.

Verify that all edits were made to the college proposal record. These changes may occur as the proposal is processed internally at the college or are a result of changes submitted to District, changes made by District Curriculum Committee or Governing Board.
