MCCCD General Education designations for courses can be obtained through the MCCCD General Education Proposal process. Proposals may be submitted to CCTA at any time and will be processed to become effective for the earliest possible year/term. Because courses are approved for general education on a district wide basis, and because the processing of general education proposals requires instructional council approval, the faculty initiator should involve the appropriate instructional council(s) in the earliest stages of proposal development. The required forms vary according to the type of degree targeted by the proposal. Particular attention should be paid to the type of degree involved, and the directions provided for that particular degree should be followed.
In developing an MCCCD General Education Proposal, the faculty initiator should review the criteria for the planned designation to determine, in consultation with faculty colleagues, the college Curriculum Development Facilitator, and members of the relevant instructional council(s), if the course meets these criteria. Criteria for the different General Education designations can be viewed on the MCCCD General Education Course Criteria Checklists, using the links given below. The faculty initiator should consult with the college representative(s) to the appropriate instructional council(s) to determine whether there is support for developing a general education proposal for the course. The council(s) can also advise the initiator if another college is already developing a similar proposal.
When the required documentation for an MCCCD General Education proposal has been developed, the following forms must be completed:
- MCCCD General Education Course Proposal Cover Form
- MCCCD General Education Criteria Checklist
Note: If more than one designation is proposed, a Criteria Checklist is completed for each designation. - MCCCD Instructional Council Evaluation of General Education Course Proposal form
These forms are submitted by the College Curriculum Technician to the appropriate instructional council(s). All appropriate instructional councils must evaluate cross-referenced courses. Councils are given ten working days to respond.
If the instructional council(s) approves the proposal, the College Curriculum Office, with the approval of the College Administration, forwards the proposal to CCTA for placement on the DCC General Agenda for review and action. Disapproval of the proposal or lack of response by council terminates the proposal.
