South Mountain Community College employee earns NAU bachelor’s degree without leaving campus

ms Lily Lough

(April, 2011) -- As a mother and employee at South Mountain Community College, Lily Lough’s time is limited.

So when Lough, 25, a Phoenix resident who has worked for seven years in SMCC’s Welcome Center as a Student Service Technician, wanted to earn a four-year degree, she turned to SMCC and NAU for help. Thanks to NAU’s “Connection” partnership with the Maricopa Community Colleges, Lough received personal advising that streamlined her transfer path to earning a bachelor’s degree. She began working on earning her Associate in Arts from SMCC and graduated from NAU in May 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, with an emphasis in Spanish. NAU Classes were held in the evening at SMCC, accommodating Lough’s busy lifestyle.

Lough recommends the program for its cohort style, small student-to-teacher ratio, personal advising and the support she received from faculty and staff.

“It was convenient to have the option of earning my bachelor’s degree from NAU at SMCC’s campus,” Lough said. “During an NAU orientation session we were given a two-year academic plan that was broken down by semester and courses. It was nice to see the big picture and work toward it.” ( Continued.... )
