Shared Unique Number System Simplifies College Course Transfer
The Shared Unique Number (SUN) System is a college course numbering system designed to help students locate and enroll in courses that have direct equivalents for transfer among Arizona’s ten public community colleges and three state universities.
Courses in the SUN System have a unique three-letter prefix and four-digit course number that represents direct course equivalency at all Arizona public community colleges and universities. Each institution retains its original course numbers, but uses the SUN to indicate commonality.
The first phase of the SUN project includes 71 Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) and common major courses. Additional courses for phase two are being reviewed by college chief academic officers for inclusion in the system.
SUN course numbers will appear in course schedules and catalogs by January 2012. College transcripts will also list SUN courses.
Senate Bill 1186, which passed into law in 2010, mandated the creation of a shared numbering system to identify courses that transfer from community colleges to universities toward a baccalaureate degree.

Veterans Education & Transition Services at the University of Arizona
The University of Arizona is known for a number of great things, and can now add veterans services to the list. Created in 2008, the VETS Center has become a national model for student veterans services on a college campus. This initiative incorporates student life, direct service such as priority enrollment, academic courses, transition programs, disability resources, advocacy on a state and national level, and research to engage and retain veterans through graduation.
There are nearly 800 student veterans enrolled at the UA, which is a Yellow Ribbon Institution, and one of 12 partners nationwide to offer the Tillman Military Scholarship. The center relies heavily on student veteran feedback and develops its programs and implements change because of this dynamic structure. The friendly staff at the VETS Center consists of trained student veterans that made the successful transition to the UA and want to help their peers do the same.(Continued...)

New Tools for Pathway Students
Arizona State University and the Maricopa Community Colleges are pleased to introduce a new tool to support students in the Maricopa-ASU Pathways Program (MAPP). MAPP students will now have access to My ASU through their My Maricopa account. MyASU is a personalized website where pathway students will be able to view their pathway plan, contact their ASU transfer representative, and easily access resources and services they need as they complete their pathway from the Maricopa Community Colleges to ASU. ASU will continue adding more features to this site in the near future. The link, “Maricopa-ASU Alliance,” is easily accessible via a student’s MyMaricopa account. Students are automatically authenticated to MyASU from the link in My Maricopa. Direct communication was sent to pathway students explaining this tool earlier this month.
