New Findings on Transfer Students from NSSE Survey
Findings from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) released this month showed that transfer students were indistinguishable from their peers in the level of academic challenge. Academic challenge, as defined in the survey, "is challenging intellectual and creative work central to student learning and collegiate quality. Colleges and universities promote high levels of student achievement by setting high expectations for student performance." The national survey obtains information from hundreds of four-year colleges and universities nationwide about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. Ottawa University: Live, Learn, Lead

Advising Guides: New Transfer Tool for Maricopa Students
For the past 18 months, District Curriculum Committee (DCC) has been discussing
how Maricopa can meet the needs of students and faculty within disciplines
that are not served by the statewide transfer degrees: AA, AAEE, AS,
ABus. There
are some disciplines for which a statewide degree has not been identified,
and in these cases faculty have proposed developing new Maricopa transfer degrees. However,
DCC does not want to support proliferation of transfer degrees and add more
complexity for students. After considerable research and discussion, the concept
of developing "Advising
Guides" to meet the identified need was endorsed by DCC. These Advising
Guides will be official advising tools that are developed by faculty, approved
by Instructional Councils, reviewed by staff in the Center for Curriculum and
Transfer Articulation (CCTA), and maintained annually by a primary college. The
guides are intended to define degree pathways into specific transfer programs.
Once approved, the guides will be available on the CCTA website.
