Maricopa Community Colleges Top the List for AGEC completers for 2005-06

Maricopans can celebrate a monumental measure of student success -- the number of students completing the Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) has nearly doubled for 2005-06. This increase is due to collaborative efforts across the district. Specifically, the District Curriculum Committee developed the AGEC Certificate in 2005, elevating the value of the general education core and recognizing students who complete this milestone. Additionally, the Academic Advisors have promoted completion of AGEC through districtwide degree checksheets, and Admissions and Records Staff intentionally reviewed student transcripts to identify completers.

When the Arizona Transfer Model was implemented in 1999, the goal was to create clear and secure transfer pathways for community college students that will allow them to maximize their experience at the community college, to incorporate community college credits or degrees efficiently into university graduation requirements, and to complete baccalaureate majors in the minimum number of required credits. A major component and foundation of the statewide pathways and transfer degrees was the Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC). AGEC is a thirty-five transferable, semester credit "block" that you can complete at any Arizona community college. Completion of the AGEC with a 2.0 or higher means that students have met the lower-division general studies requirements at any of the universities, and guarantees them admission into the university. The intent was to have "built in" incentives for students to complete the core or block, while preparing them to enter into baccalaureate programs. (Continue...)
