Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT)
Clinical Laboratory Technicians perform clinical laboratory tests in all
laboratory areas including blood banking, chemistry, hematology, immunology,
and microbiology. Duties include collecting blood samples, preparing chemical
solutions, analyzing specimens, enforcing quality control measures, maintaining
equipment, keeping records, and reporting results. Working under the supervision
of Clinical Laboratory Scientists, CLTs hunt for clues to the absence, presence,
extent, and cause of disease.
Work Environment:
Employment is found in hospital laboratories, medical clinics, research
laboratories, and educational facilities.
Job Outlook:
Employment opportunities are strong and expected to increase over the
next few years.
Licensure/Certification:
Most employers currently require national certification. To become certified,
upon graduation students must pass an examination given by the board
of registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP),
the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), or the American Medical Technologists
(AMT). Certification is voluntary.
Salary:
Estimated salaries range from $14 - $34 per hour.
Program Offerings:
Phoenix College began offering the Cinical Laboratory Sciences program in January 2006. The fifteen-month program begins in January and ends in late March. Didactic courses and student labs are scheduled on Friday from 8:00am - 4:00pm on the Phoenix College campus. The clinical rotations are scheduled during the summer months and early spring at various local laboratories. Both a certificate of completion and an associate degree are offered as program options.

and certificate programs at one of the Arizona community colleges, you
have an opportunity to complete your bachelor’s degree through
a statewide pathway. This pathway maximizes the use of your community
college credits towards the degree. To help you understand the pathway
and the route to your degree, use the information that has been prepared
by faculty and advisors from both the community colleges and the Arizona
public universities.
The Arizona public universities and community colleges have established
a unique transfer agreement specifically for the Health Professions
Career programs. Instead of relying on a course-by-course evaluation
of a student’s academic transcript, the faculty agreed that it
would be more appropriate to consider the Associate in Applied Science
(AAS) degrees or Certificates of Completion as “blocks”
for transfer to the university.
