Medical Radiographer
Medical Radiographers use sophisticated imaging equipment to x-ray parts of the human body. They perform medical imaging procedures for use in diagnosing medical problems, prepare patients for radiologic examinations, position patients correctly, ensure appropriate radiation safety, keep patient records and maintain radiographic equipment.

Work Environment:
Employment is found in physicians’ offices, clinics, hospitals and diagnostic imaging centers.

Job Outlook:
In Arizona, an annual growth rate of 4% is expected in the medical radiography field over the next six years. It is estimated that this will create about 200 new jobs a year.

Licensure/Certification:
Graduates are eligible to apply for admission to the certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Passing the ARRT exam and licensure by the Arizona State Medical Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners (MRTBE) is necessary for employment.

Salary:
Radiographers earn from $20.00 to $40.00 per hour, this translates to an average annual salary of $41,000 to $83,000.

Program Offerings:
GateWay Community College offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Medical Radiography. The degree not only provides you with basic imaging principles, but it will prepare you with the job skills required for employment. In addition, a foundation in Medical Radiography will prepare you for career advancement in other imaging professions such as Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Computed Tomography, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Block Transfer for Health Professions:
In an innovative joint degree program with GateWay Community College, the Department of Health Sciences at NAU offrers an online degree completion program that allows the current or prior students in one of the Diagnostic Medical Imaging and Therapy (DMIT) programs offered at GateWay to earn a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree from NAU.
