Medical Transcriptionist
Medical Transcriptionists learn how to understand and transcribe a variety of medical reports. They use computer software to translate recordings made by physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient assessment and treatment.

Work Environment:
Employment is found in physicians’ offices, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic services, insurance companies, or private transcription services. Many transcriptionists work from their homes.

Licensure/Certification:
The American Association for Medical Transcription offers two voluntary certification exams. The exam for a Registered Medical Transcriptionist is designed to be taken following the completion of a two year course of study in medical transcription. The Certified Medical Transcriptionist exam is designed for practitioners with at least two years of experience in hospital-based transcription.

Program Offerings:
GateWay Community College offers an Associate in Applied Science degree in Medical Transcription. The program is a two year course of study and all courses with a MTR prefix are offered as self-paced, distance-learning classes.
