Nuclear Medicine Technologist
Nuclear Medicine Technologists are highly specialized healthcare professionals who perform a number of tasks. The field of nuclear medicine combines the use of specialized radiation detection equipment with the fields of computer science, chemistry, physics, and mathematics to gather information of the structure and function of the systems in the human body on a molecular level. This information is used for diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Work Environment:
Employment is found in hospitals, clinics, radiopharmacies, mobile units, physicians’ offices, clinical research, education, and administration.

Job Outlook:
Technological advances and new applications of nuclear medicine will increase the demand for Nuclear Medicine Technologists.

Licensure/Certification:
After completion of the program of study, students will be prepared to take either of the certifying examinations offered by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board or the American Registry in Radiologic Technology. These exams will qualify you for Arizona State Licensure.

Salary:
Graduates in Nuclear Medicine Technology earn approximately $22.25 to $44.00 an hour, depending on experience, for an average annual salary of $46,400 to $91,500.

Program Offerings:
GateWay Community College offers a Certificate of Completion and an Associate in Applied Science degree in Nuclear Medicine. Programs combine class work with on-site clinical training in various local hospitals, clinics, and radiopharmacies.

In an innovative joint degree program with GateWay Community College, the Department of Health Sciences at NAU offrers an online degree completion program that allows the current or prior students in one of the Diagnostic Medical Imaging and Therapy (DMIT) programs offered at GateWay to earn a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree from NAU.
