Healthcare Education : Assessment Overview

Welcome to the Assessment page of the Health Care Integrated Educational System (HCIES). The Assessment program is referred to as the Integrated Competency Assessment Network, or ICAN. It is designed to provide support for the development and evaluation of assessment tools for the allied health and nursing educational programs within the Maricopa Community Colleges.

Assessment is the process of measuring students’ learning or achievement. It may include traditional paper and pencil tests of knowledge, performance simulation tests of skills, assessment interviews, clinical evaluations of student performance, and other methods.

Assessment may:

  • Occur prior to program admission
  • Be used for admission, advanced placement into a program, or remediation
  • Occur in the classroom to measure student achievement and assign grades
  • Occur upon exit from the program to measure educational outcomes
  • Qualify students for graduation
  • Occur prior to entering the workforce in an occupation for the purpose of selection, occupational licensing or certification
