About Us

The National Center for Teacher Education (NCTE) provides and inspires leadership through innovative teacher education initiatives by working collaboratively to advance the quality of teaching and learning in Arizona and the nation. NCTE is a department within the Academic Affairs Division of the Maricopa Community Colleges.

Goals:

Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships that support current Maricopa Community College initiatives.

Provide leadership and support for the planning, development and evaluation of Maricopa Community College teacher education and early childhood programs.

Develop community partnerships, programs and services to support the recruitment, preparation and retention of pre K-12 teachers in Arizona.

Provide leadership, planning, and coordination for national programs and services to support pre K-12 teacher recruitment, preparation, retention and renewal.

Our Programs and Initiatives

Teacher Education Partnership Commission (TEPC) – TEPC is a statewide initiative which addresses Pre K-12 recruitment, preparation, and retention issues in the state of Arizona and responds as a partnership in the establishment of programs and services. Membership includes community college, university, school district, state and local government, business, and community organization representatives. A statewide forum, addressing critical teacher education issues, is held annually.

Maricopa-Arizona State University (ASU) Alliance – The Maricopa-ASU Alliance is a partnership designed to promote a seamless experience for students who want to earn an Associate Degree from a Maricopa Community College and a Baccalaureate Degree from ASU. NCTE provides support and leadership for the Teacher Education Alliance (TEALL) in the form of program and meeting coordination, data tracking, orientation planning, website maintenance, and facilitation of the scholarship process.

Council for Teacher Education (CTE) – CTE is a council comprised of administrative and education faculty representatives from the Maricopa Community Colleges that provides vision and direction for teacher education program developments within the district through dialog and communication.

Communication In Science Inquiry Project (CISIP) – CISIP is a grant from the National Science Foundation which produces professional development resources for community college, high school, and middle school English, math, science, and English as a Second Language (ESL) faculty to integrate learning principles, scientific talking and writing, and academic language acquisition approaches into their instruction.

Teacher Education Career Pathways – Building upon the success of the College and Career Transition Initiative, NCTE assists Maricopa Community College teacher education programs in connecting with their feeder high schools and developing education career pathways with students in the Education Professions Program.

National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP) – NACCTEP promotes the community college role in the recruitment, preparation, retention, and renewal of diverse Pre K-12 teachers and advocates for quality teacher education programs in the community college. NACCTEP was developed in partnership by the Maricopa Community Colleges, the League for Innovation, and the American Association of Community Colleges, and holds a national conference annually.

Support Efforts – NCTE supports community college teacher education programs at the Maricopa Community Colleges, in Arizona and the nation by developing and maintaining the NCTE, TEPC and NACCTEP websites; planning, facilitating and participating in local, state and national conferences, forums and events; forming partnerships with school districts; developing marketing materials; and providing scholarships for teacher education students.
