NACCTEP Conference 2007

The National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP) held its 5th national conference, New Beginnings and All That Jazz in Community College Teacher Education Programs, March 2-4, 2007, at the Hilton Riverside in New Orleans, Louisiana. Almost 300 representatives representing community colleges from across the country attended the conference. Conference highlights included dynamic keynote speakers, a ‘Voices from New Orleans’ panel, and a slew of educational sessions focusing on community college teacher education programs, policy, partnerships and practice. Operated out of the National Center for Teacher Education (NCTE) at Maricopa Community Colleges, under the leadership of Dr. Cheri St. Arnauld, National Director of Teacher Education Programs, and with the continued support of Dr. Maria Harper-Marinick, Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs, NACCTEP and its annual conference continue to grow and expand.

Maricopa Community Colleges were well represented at the conference. During the Opening Session, Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) was recognized by Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the Two Year College for the college’s exemplary efforts to prepare students for careers in education. Dr. Maria Hesse, President of CGCC, Sharon Fagan, Teacher Education Program Coordinator and faculty member, and Carrie Seather, CGCC teacher education program graduate, accepted the award on the college’s behalf.

Dr. Brenda Larson and Sharon Fagan, from CGCC, presented a breakout session titled ‘Engaging Curriculum, Integrating Technology, Student Assessment, and All That Jazz: Portfolios in a Community College Teacher Education Program’. Dr. Cheri St. Arnauld and Ray Ostos from NCTE, and Gaye Bumpsted-Perry from the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (MCLI), presented a breakout session titled ‘Creative Challenges: Design and Development of E-Learning for Professional Development’. According to evaluations, these sessions were ‘excellent and inspiring’, ‘very informative’, and ‘made the trip to New Orleans worthwhile’!

Other representatives from Maricopa Community Colleges who participated in conference events included Dr. Rufus Glasper, who hosted the President’s Reception, and various administrative, faculty and staff members who attended the conference.
