Like each of you, we too are greatly saddened by the tremendous loss and hardship resulting from Hurricane Katrina. It is with heartache that we watch the news and see the devastation of the Gulf Coast.
We encourage you to support the Community College Hurricane Relief Fund, coordinated by the American Association of Community Colleges.

The Art of Awareness
The Teacher Development Center at Paradise Valley Community College, with the support of an MCLI Learning Grant, hosted “The Art of Awareness: How Observation Can Transform your Teaching” from January 12 to January 14, 2006. Keynote speakers Margie Carter and Deb Curtis led participants through varied experiences designed to refresh their awareness, focus on the powers of observation and increase their ability to use observations to inform teaching. Included in the diverse group of attendees were early childhood education students, teachers, and faculty from Glendale Community College, Paradise Valley Community College, Phoenix College, City of Phoenix Head Start, Southwest Human Development, local school districts and center based programs in Phoenix and Tucson.
Due to increased accountability standards, early childhood educators today must hone their skills in assessing children’s growth and development. The format of this conference gave participants the opportunity to explore the role of observation and documentation in children’s learning in depth. Small cohort groups were formed to provide attendees with the opportunity to explore the various aspects of observation, engage in meaningful dialogue, and create a community of learners. Cohort facilitators were: Christie Colunga, Early Childhood Education Faculty at PVCC; Rosemary Hooper, Director of the Children’s Center at PVCC; Dr. Evelyn Lieberman, Consultant for Literacy Solution; Judy Poggi, Child and Family Studies Faculty at GCC; Susan Ryan, Adjunct Faculty at PVCC; Ana Trejo, City of Phoenix Head Start.
The effective conference format resulted in a very successful learning event. According to one teacher’s evaluation of the “Art of Awareness” experience, “I knew that I wanted to be an early childhood education teacher 12 years ago. I could always remember the feelings that I had making discoveries as a young child. The last 7 months I lost knowing what that feeling was like as I was too worried about paper work, regulations, and deadlines. NOT ANY MOREJ. Thank you for bringing that feeling back. I can’t wait to share this information with my co-workers. I know the children deserve it and so do I!”
