Kayla Winger, PVCC student, presents Beacon Teacher of the Year award to Diane Elliott

What's new at Paradise Valley Community College?

First Annual Teacher Education Orientation

Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) held its first annual Teacher Education Orientation on August 22, 2008. Thirty administrators, faculty and staff from PVCC, Paradise Valley Unified School District (PVUSD), the Arizona State University College of Teacher Education and Leadership (ASU CTEL) and the National Center for Teacher Education came together on behalf of PVCC teacher education students.

A morning session included a welcome from PVCC’s Interim President, Dr. Paul Dale; PVUSD’s Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Dr. Karen Gasket; ASU CTEL’s Assistant Dean of Partnership Programs, Dr. Scott Ridley; PVCC’s Director of Service Learning, Dr. Paula Vaughn; PVCC’s Education Faculty, Debbie Voll; and PVCC’s Education Student Ambassador, Trisha Moran. Breakout sessions, offered throughout the day, included information on professionalism, service-learning, student services and education programs.

At the orientation luncheon, Diane Elliott, from Larkspur Elementary School, was recognized as the 2007-2008 Beacon Teacher of the Year. Kayla Winger, a current teacher education student at PVCC and former fourth grade student in Elliott’s class, nominated her after returning to Elliot’s classroom as a service-learning student. Beacon teachers, identified by PVUSD principals, are teachers who have agreed to mentor PVCC students taking education courses.

Evaluation comments such as those below indicate the success of this event. Thank you to Harriet Betts and Paula Vaughn for organizing this wonderful student activity.

Today I learned…
“about the progression of classes, service-learning and activities available to guide me and assist me with my goals.”
“about all of the awesome programs available to help me with my education and how excited I am to become a teacher!”

I appreciated…
“how helpful and caring EVERYONE was.
“all of the enthusiasm, information, and the ability to meet and talk to teachers and advisors throughout the day.”
“the sense of community I felt.”

Congratulations to the Child Development Center

This summer, Paradise Valley Community College’s Child Development Center became one of the first early childhood programs in the country to earn accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The Children’s Center at PVCC offers a developmentally appropriate care and education program for 3- to 5-year-old children of students enrolled in classes on the Paradise Valley campus.

“We’re proud to have earned this mark of quality from NAEYC and to be recognized for our commitment to reaching the highest professional standards,” said Rosemary Hooper, supervisor of the Center. “NAEYC Accreditation assures families that their children in our program are getting the best care and early learning experiences possible.”

To earn NAEYC Accreditation, the Center went through an extensive process measuring the program against 10 new NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards and more than 400 related Accreditation Criteria. Find out more about the Child Development Center by clicking here or by calling 602-787-7150.
