STEM Education Summer Internship Program Launched

Managed through the Education Studies Department at Mesa Community College (MCC), thirty-six students from the Maricopa County Community College District and Northern Arizona University (NAU) were placed in summer internships at K-12 science and math camps.

Hailey Hill completed an Arizona Science Center (ASC) internship and said of her experience, "I had an awesome time at the ASC internship. The kids were great and it was very cool to see how much work and thought goes into teaching, and how fast the kids pick it up!" Hailey has attended Paradise Valley, Scottsdale and Mesa Community Colleges. Read More

ASU Student Teaching Experience Redesigned

The traditional student teaching experience involving a single semester of placement in a school is becoming a thing of the past at Arizona State University (ASU). A pilot program with three partner school districts across metropolitan Phoenix placed cohorts of elementary education teacher candidates in schools for the full 2010-11 academic year. Students take their university teacher preparation classes on-site while gaining significantly more experience as a classroom teacher under the guidance of mentor teachers and university site coordinators. The pilot program's success has paved the way for this collaborative teaching experience to expand to more than a dozen partner districts in 2011-12 and be incorporated into bachelor's degree programs in early childhood education, special education, and diversity in language and literacy. The full-year student teaching experience serves as the culmination of ASU's teacher preparation programs, now known collectively by the name iTeachAZ. Read More

Profile of Teachers in the U.S. 2011

The National Center for Education Information has been conducting national surveys of teachers since 1979 to find out who they are and what they think about a wide array of issues facing the teaching profession and education in general. According to Profile of Teachers in the U.S. 2011, there are 3.2 million public school teachers educating the nation's 49.4 million children attending public PreK-12 schools; one-third of first-time public school teachers hired since 2005 entered the profession through an alternative program other than a college campus-based teacher education program; and while there are striking differences between the non-traditional population of new teachers and teachers who enter teaching through traditional programs, there are amazing similarities among all teachers surveyed, regardless of their backgrounds, how they prepared to teach, their age and how long they've been teaching. Student Teaching in the U.S.

The National Council on Teacher Quality undertook a comprehensive examination of student teaching programs of a stratified random sample of higher education institutions across the United States, with at least one institution in each state. An extensive range of documents that would inform the structure of the programs, amplified by several stages of feedback from officials in the institutions themselves, a survey of local school principals who receive student teachers from the selected programs and five case studies based on campus visits, provided a comprehensive policy and on-the-ground picture of the student teaching landscape. Having reviewed existing standards for evaluating the quality of a teacher preparation program and how they fell short, this report identifies 19 new standards that are more specific and objectively measurable. The Undereducated American

A report by Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce concludes that the U.S. has been producing too few college-educated workers since 1980 and will need an additional 20 million workers with at least some postsecondary education over the next 15 years to meet future economic requirements and to reduce income inequality. According to The Undereducated American, the undersupply of postsecondary-educated workers has led to two distinct problems: a problem of efficiency and a problem of equity. Without enough talent to meet demand, we are losing out on the productivity that more postsecondary-educated workers contribute to our economy. Moreover, scarcity has driven up the cost of postsecondary talent precipitously, exacerbating inequality. Read More

Ways to Improve K-12 STEM Education

State, national and local policymakers should elevate science education in grades K-12 to the same level of importance as reading and mathematics, says a new report from the National Research Council. The report recommends ways that leaders at all levels can improve K-12 education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. According to Adam Gamoran, chair of the committee that wrote the report, "We need to help all students become scientifically literate because citizens are increasingly facing decisions related to science and technology." The report identifies key elements of high-quality STEM education to which policymakers could target improvements. Read More
