Teacher Education

The Associate in Arts in Elementary Education (AAEE) degree is recommended for students who want to pursue teacher certification or become a classroom instructional aide in the areas of elementary, early childhood, multilingual/multicultural, or special education. The AAEE transfers directly to any Arizona public university as the first two years of a bachelor’s degree.

An Associate in Arts (AA) degree is recommended for students who wish to pursue a secondary education pathway.

Early Childhood

Our Early Childhood Development Program emphasizes working with multilingual and multicultural children ages three to five. It prepares students to work effectively with children and families in early childhood settings, such as Head Start programs and child care centers, and as family homecare providers. Program options promote the improvement of existing skills and career advancement.

Montessori

The Montessori Teacher Education program is designed to prepare students for a career in teaching early childhood in Montessori schools. We offer a comprehensive, fully accredited Montessori pre-school program for those working with children ages two-and-a-half to six years old. Students have the opportunity to earn a Certificate of Completion in Early Childhood Development/Montessori, and may continue academic work for an AAS degree in Early Childhood Development/ Montessori. Upon the completion of the program, students will be equipped to work effectively with children and families in both school and home environments, and to initiate upward career movement or improve existing skills.

Courses are taken in sequence over a two year period and are offered in the evenings or on Saturdays at the SMCC campus or at local Montessori schools.
