MARICOPA INSTITUTE for LEARNING:
Ly T. L. Tran-Nguyen was awarded a Maricopa Institute for Learning (MIL) Fellowship for 2003-2004. As an MIL Fellow, she will have the opportunity to design and conduct research related to teaching and learning. Below is a brief description of her Learning Project proposal:
Neuroscience research suggests that the brain is an incredibly ‘plastic’ organ that is capable of lifelong changes, a concept referred to as neural plasticity. Neural plasticity can occur in response to various factors, including experience and thus has direct implications for teaching and learning. It is possible that different classroom experiences likely lead to differences in brain development and hence learning. This project will investigate the effectiveness of various teaching strategies that involve different types of classroom experiences on student learning.
FEATURED PRESENTER:
On Saturday, March 15th, Dr. Ly T. L. Tran-Nguyen, Denise Preisser, and Dr. Gayla Preisser presented a talk at the 2003 League Learning Summit entitled, Brain-Based Learning: Blending Neuroscience and Pedagogy. The following is an abstract of their presentation.
The recent explosion of brain research, suggesting a direct correlation between an enriched learning experience and neuronal growth, has profound implications for education and the enhancement of overall brain functioning. Session facilitators will address brain anatomy, development, and plasticity as it relates to learning and teaching. Participants gained insights and learned strategies for making their college classes brain compatible. Emphasis was given to hands-on and brain-based activities.
