The Asian and Pacific Islander Association (APIA) of MCCD held a banquet last Saturday evening, May 3, 2003, at Sampan Chinese Restaurant in the Chinese Culture Center in Phoenix. This was a recognition banquet for Asian and Pacific Islanders (API) graduates and scholarship recipients from the ten community colleges. In addition, APIA members supporters from MCCD and from Asian communities were also recognized at this banquet.
The evening was a big success. More than 180 members and supporters attended the banquet to include four governing board members: Ms. Linda Rosenthal, Ms. Nancy Stein, Mr. Gene Eastin, and Dr. Don Campbell. Former President of Chandler Gilbert Community College, Ms. Arnette Ward, performed the opening song "America" and Dr. Christine Iijima Hall, APIA Advisor and Director of Employee Services, MCCD, was the emcee for the evening. Mr. Steven Schenk, Director of MCCD Foundation and APIA major donor, was also present to show his support. Former MCC's president, Dr. Wallace Simpson and his wife Rose, were also present at the banquet.
Community leaders attended the event included Presidents of of the various Asian Communities such as Arizona Asian American Association, Japanese American Citizens League, Fillipino Association, Korean Association, Chinese American Association, and ASU's Asian American Faculty and Staff Association.
President Maria Hesse, Chandler/Gilbert Community College, was recognized at the banquet for her support of APIA. She was also recognized as the first president who officially joined APIA as well a major donor to APIA.
This banquet was a collaborative effort from APIA planning committee members from the ten community colleges with major participations from Chandler Gilbert Community College, South Mountain Community College, and Mesa Community College. Also, all APIA officers were present to show their supports for this important event.
