PALO ALTO, Calif. — George Alex became the latest Sooner to break a program record as he took down OU’s 5,000-meter run record in action at the Payton Jordan Invitational late Sunday night at Stanford University. The junior broke the record with a time of 13.40.73. The record had been broken just two races earlier than Alex after Kevin Schwab finished third overall and first among collegiate athletes with a time of 13:40.81 in the event's second section, shattering the then-previous record of 13:51.13 run last season by Kevin Williams.
Alex overtakes the Big 12 lead in the event and moves to No. 4 nationally while Schwab moves to No. 5 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12 with the result that gives him both the indoor and outdoor records in the distance. Schwab broke the indoor record earlier this year with a time of 13:36.14.
Williams also ran under his former school record as he clocked a time of 13:44.58 in the same event to move into No. 4 in the Big 12. Williams finished eighth overall and fifth among collegiate athletes in the event. Bill Kogel ran the thid-fastest time in Oklahoma history as he clocked a time of 13:51.24.
The women’s 5,000-meter run saw Jessica Engel claim second with the second-fastest time in Oklahoma history, 16:07.64. The junior’s time is the fifth fastest in the Big 12 as she trails just the Oklahoma record of 15:59.70 run by Kellie Cathey in 1982.
The women’s 800-meter run saw Natalie Crain continue her PR streak in the event as she finished fourth with a time of 2:07.00, the fifth-fastest time in Oklahoma history. Freshman Kelsey Brown was just behind Crain with a fifth-place finish, clocking a time of 2:07.17, the seventh-fastest time in Oklahoma history. The times move Crain to No. 4 in the Big 12 and Brown to No. 5 in the conference.
Molly Ferguson staked her claim on the OU performance list as she ran the 10th-fastest 1,500-meter run in Oklahoma history to take fourth in the event with a time of 4:27.45.

SEATTLE — Jacob Boone and Eric Harasyn cracked the four-minute mark in the men’s mile Saturday at the Husky Invitational while Rob Sorrell broke the school record in the 3,000-meter run. The three led a group of Oklahoma men’s distance runners who earned five NCAA provisional qualifying times.
The performances of Boone and Harasyn mark just the second and third time the feat has been accomplished at OU. The two became the first in the Big 12 to accomplish the feat.
Running in the third heat of the men’s invitational mile, Boone finished 10th overall with a time of 3:59.44. Harasyn, in the second heat, narrowly eclipsed the four-minute standard with a time of 3:59.97. The time is the second fastest in program history behind Boone’s 3:59.07 run at the Meyo Invitational in 2009.
Running in the third heat of the invitational 3,000-meter run, Sorrell easily eclipsed the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 8:05.00 and improved his PR in the event by close to nine seconds with a final time of 7:57.47. Sorrell’s time ranks second in the Big 12 this season and broke the previous OU record of 8:01.76 set by Kevin Williiams just minutes before.
Before Sorrell ran in the event’s third heat, Williams briefly held the OU program record for about eight minutes. Williams finished fifth overall and fourth among collegiate competitors in the second heat with a personal best 8:01.76, the fourth best time in the Big 12 this season. Williams time broke the previous OU record of 8:03.43 set by Jason Larabee in 1998.
With Saturday’s results, three of the top four 3,000-meter times in OU history have come this year with Williams at No. 2 and Kevin Schwab (8:05.02) at No. 4.
Chris Sweeney continued the streak of season best times as the junior ran a PR of 1:50.16 in the 800-meter run. The NCAA provisional qualifying time is the sixth fastest in program history as three of the top six have come under current OU runners.
Ross Larimer cracked the OU top-10 performance list in the men’s mile as he clocked the ninth-fastest mile in program history, 4:07.30, to finish ninth in the event. Alex Muntefering also ran a season best in the event as he finished 17th with a time of 4:10.40.
With Larimer’s mark at No. 9 on the OU performance list, current Oklahoma runners now control half of the performance list as Boone, Tony Clement, Harasyn and Sorrell rank first through fourth on the list.
