Curriculum Process for New Counseling
&
Personal Development (CPD) and Behavioral Health (BHS) Courses
Step One
The counselor, curriculum initiator, interested in developing a new course
develops a concept paper about the proposed course and discusses it with
his or her department chair. The counselor also talks with counseling colleagues
as a means for fleshing out ideas and soliciting input from other professionals.
Step Two
Concept paper is presented to Counseling Instructional Council (CIC) at
a regular meeting. This is done by the curriculum initiator or department
chair. If CIC believes the concept has merit, they endorse the topic and
ask the counselor to go forward with developing the new course.
Step Three
Curriculum initiator prepares a rough draft of the course proposal. He
or she presents this draft at a meeting of the Counseling Curriculum Committee.
Committee members provide assistance with proper format, course description,
competencies and outline. A member of the committee is appointed as a resource
colleague to work with the curriculum initiator assisting him or her through
the remainder of the curriculum development and approval process.
Step Four
Curriculum initiator works with the college curriculum designer or technician
at his or her college to finalize the curriculum proposal. It is returned
to the campus and continues through the regular approval process for new
curriculum.
Step Five
Dean of Instruction forwards new curriculum proposal form to CIC for review
and recommendation. Discussion is held during regular meeting. If CIC approves
the proposal, it is returned to the campus and continues through the regular
campus approval process for new curriculum. If the course is not approved
by CIC it is returned to course initiator with recommendations for future
course development.
Step Six
New curriculum proposal is reviewed at the college level. If changes are
made at this level, the new curriculum proposal is then returned by the
course initiator to CIC for further review and approval.
Step Seven
New curriculum proposal is reviewed at the district level.
Step Eight
MCCD Governing Board approves new courses.
