COUNSELING CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES
February 9, 2000
Members Present: Joseph Bednorz
Cordelia Wright
Barbara Gordon
Jeannie Wyatt, Chair
1. Approval of Minutes
Minutes from the November and December meetings were approved. Jeannie
will put these minutes on the curriculum web site.
2. Counseling Curriculum Committee Membership
Jeannie learned this week that Nina Harris is unable to serve on the
Counseling Curriculum Committee. Jeannie will contact Margaret Macias,
department chair, to determine if she wants another counselor to represent
Phoenix College at the spring meetings.
3. Objective A: Course Articulation with University of Arizona
Rene Barrios, CIC chair, forwarded a phone message from Dr. Mary Briden
stating the Articulation Task Force (TATF) meeting will occur on February
17. Dr. Briden is aware of our continued interest regarding the status
of CPD courses and stated she will contact Rene following the TATF meeting.
4. Objective C: CPD and BHS Curriculum Review Process
Fred Wieck, PVCC chair, volunteered to become a review leader for CPD
102AH, Stress Management, and CPD 102AR, Relaxation Training. Committee
members are pleased Fred is willing to assume this responsibility. Barbara
Gordon said she will talk with Paula Waybright, adjunct counseling faculty
at MCC and a one-semester-only replacement in Career Services, about becoming
a review leader for CPD 126, Writing Resumes. If Paula is agreeable, Barbara
will work with her in a consultative role. Jeannie agreed to make an additional
attempt to identify a review leader for CPD 104, Career and Personal Development.
If no counselor is willing, CPD 104 will be moved to the 2000-2001 course
review list.
Committee members looked at the Check List for the Course Review Process
that Barbara Gordon had prepared for the counselor meeting in January.
Everyone believes the check list is a good idea and appreciated Barbara's
efforts in having it ready for the counselor meeting. To make the document
useable throughout the five year course review cycle, several suggestions
were made. These included adding signature lines for the review leader
and committee chair plus a statement at the end acknowledging content developed
by MCLI. After Barbara makes the modifications, the check list will be
put on the curriculum web site.
5. Proposed modifications to CWE198AA, CWE198AB and CWE198AC
Cori Wright made committee members aware of proposed modifications to
CWE 198 modules that were submitted to Dr. Ken Roberts at SMCC. She sent
an alert message to Lydia Perez, SMCC curriculum technician, stating that
CWE courses are overseen by the Counseling Instructional Council.
Jeannie will ask Rene Barrios, CIC Chair, to contact Dr. Ken Roberts
so the course modification review period allows time for the Counseling
Curriculum Committee and CIC to become involved in the process. This item
will be placed on the March agenda so committee members can look at the
modified course descriptions and their relationship to CWE 198 competencies
and outline.
6. Objective B: Web site for Counseling Curriculum Committee
Committee members adjourned to the third floor to look at the curriculum
web site on a MCLI computer. Unfortunately, the computer network and phone
lines to SCC were not operating so the CIC home page could not be accessed.
Everyone agreed to review the curriculum web site on their own and provide
feedback at the March meeting. The web site address is: www.sc.maricopa.edu/cic
7. New Course Proposed
Jeannie distributed copies of Jeff Austin's concept paper endorsed by
CIC in May, 1999 and his subsequent proposed course entitled "Survival
in the Career Jungle." Committee members asked for additional time
to examine the proposal before making comments and identifying a resource
person to work with Jeff. This item will be added to the March agenda.
8. Objective D: Researching Internet based counseling courses
Neither work tasks nor a sequence of events has been identified for
accomplishing Objective D. Joseph volunteered to develop a recommended
work plan to the committee at the March meeting.
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 8, 2:00 4:00
PM.
