COUNSELING CURRICULUM SUBCOMMITTEE MINUTES
October 13, 1999

Members Present: Joseph Bednorz GCC
  Barbara Gordon MCC
  Cori Wright SMCC
  Jeannie Wyatt, Chair SCC

1. Subcommittee representative from Phoenix College

Nina Harris volunteered to join the counseling curriculum subcommittee in February 2000. Jeannie Wyatt will forward the minutes of the meetings to Nina and explain the subcommittees role, goals and tasks.

2. Curriculum Process

A.) Subcommittee members were given copies of the Curriculum Process for New Counseling and Behavior Health Courses and the Process for Modification.  These were approved by CIC in Spring of 1999.

B.) At the September dc meeting, Jim Rubin , counselor at PVCC, requested CPD 1O3BL, Dynamics of Leadership, be renamed Emerging Leaders. Jim offers this class as an outward bound experience along with classroom sessions. It is a popular class on the PVCC campus. CIC will act on Jim's request since the sub committee does over see course modifications.

C.) CIC gave approval to the new course Personal Spiritual Development after minor changes. Cori Wright will bring to the subcommittee copies of the final outline. The course proposal goes to the district board in November.

D.) Jeff Austin and other counselors are developing a new course on attitudes and behaviors in the workplace. The motivation in developing this course is that the course could be a requirement or elective choice for MCCD Occupational Programs.

3. Articulation of CPD Courses

Since University of Arizona does not accept CPD courses as elective credit, those courses can not be used as electives in the new AGEC pathways degree plans. If University of Arizona changed their articulation response then CPD courses would be acceptable elective credit for AGEC pathways degree plans since all three state universities recognize them as transferable credit.

The subcommittee checked the Course Equivalency Guide to determine if counseling classes taught at Pima Community College are transferable to University of Arizona. It appears Pima Community College does not offer courses through their counseling department.

The subcommittee agreed to work with the CIC to determine what approach could be taken so CPD courses would be acceptable elective credit for AGEC degree plans.

4. Planning for 1999-2000

Discussion by the subcommittee centered on what could be the role of CIC and the subcommittee in working with University of Arizona regarding CPD courses meeting the criteria for elective credit. This is seen as an urgent agenda to be addressed by CIC.

Distance Learning Counseling Courses. Cori shared her experiences when she developed and taught a distance Learning Course. After discussion the subcommittee decided to direct their task to researching how colleges outside of MCCD offer CPD courses on the web.
