Counseling Curriculum Committee

Minutes of October 1, 2001

Attended by: Cynthia Steele (PC), Cori Wright (SMCC), Marjane Maton (GCC), Marianne Auten (PVCC) and Stephanie Fujii (EMCC).

I. Review of the Minutes from September 17, 2001

Changed the minutes to reflect the inclusion of carry over items as part of this year's work plans. Stephanie will make the changes and then forward the minutes to Ava for posting on the website.

II. 2001-2002 Work Plan & Focus

Reviewed the course curriculum process (new and current courses) for the new members, and CCC's role. Members shared concerns regarding the vocabulary, explaining that the terms, i.e., "approved," and "completed," etc. are confusing, so will work to attempt to clarify that for the future. There were questions about the status of CPD 250, Peer Mentoring. Members were not sure where CPD 250 is in the curriculum process (facilitator, CCC, CIC???), so the committee will research and follow up.

III. New Course Consideration Art Therapy Groups

A question was asked re: the difference between CPD & BHS courses. Cori explained that BHS courses are occupational and are taught to build skills necessary behavioral health helping fields, while CPD courses are designed for one's own personal development.

Cori presented BHS 282, Art Therapy Groups. She explained that the concepts for this new course have been introduced through CIC, and meet with their approval. Discussed course competencies and content. At SMCC, it was encouraged that the name be changed, so CCC proposed "Art Process Groups." CCC also suggested that the competencies reflect that this class is to be a facilitator/coach, not a therapist (act as an aid to the therapist.) CCC discussed the pre-requisites, and wanted to insure that content did not overlap. Cori will review and compare BHS 115, BHS 215 & BHS 281, and bring it back to CCC.

IV. Carry Over Items from 2000-2001

Reviewed the process for preparing materials for CPD 160, Introduction to Multiculturalism, for Liberal Studies requirement at NAU. Cynthia shared the memo from Don Richardson about the steps involved in the process, and CCC discussed the best way to proceed. It was suggested we contact Debra Glasper at SCC, since she was one of the original facilitators in the development of the course to get the copies of the original packet of info used (suggested texts, table of contents, syllabus, assignments, etc.). We would ask CPD faculty to send their CPD 160 syllabi, assignments, activities to CCC to enable us to prepare the submission materials.

V. Additional Information

Ava Jenson, SCC, stopped by to share history and information about a new course being developed at SCC. SCC has a new AAA (meaning any faculty member can teach the class) 195 developed by psychology and communication instructors which is being offered to parents of new college students. The course title is "parent for Student Success. The class content will focus on critical thinking skills and communication skills for parents, and how to best work/support their new college student. Counseling faculty were originally concerned that this course would be duplicating content of other CPD classes. Ava insures that this is not the case; rather this is aimed for different population with different areas of concerns. Ava also shared that this course also provides an opportunity for counselors to promote CPD courses and counseling services for students to the instructors and parents as well as serve as guest presenters on topics such as Risky Behaviors, etc. Ava came to keep us informed and help alleviate any concerns- which no one on the committee had after talking with her.

CCC discussed review of course materials prior to meetings. We will try and get new and modified course proposal information and materials out to the members about one week before our monthly CCC meetings.

Members shared the concern of how to best track courses as they proceed through the curriculum review process. It was suggested that CCC follow up with the course facilitator. Cynthia, as CCC Chair, will work to do this.

Fred Wicke will not be on the committee.
