Guests: Jim Rubin

1. Personal Spiritual Development Course Proposal

Jim Rubin and Jeff Austin presented their revised course proposal.  As part of the curriculum process for new courses, Jim Rubin and Jeannie Wyatt worked together last spring and over the summer to address concerns expressed by Counseling Instructional Council members.  Their concerns were:  (1) course description needs to reflect the purpose and content of the course, (2) course description needs to be aligned with the course outline, and (3) course competencies need to be directly related to the course description.

The subcommittee unanimously agreed that the revised course proposal satisfactorily addresses the three concerns.  The remainder of the discussion focused on course content.  Jim and Jeff answered questions asked by subcommittee members.  While the course proposal received general support, Jeannie stated she continues to have reservations about the course outline appearing to be more content than process oriented.  She specifically pointed to section III on the course outline.

The subcommittee will forward the course proposal, Personal Spiritual Development, to CIC for consideration at their September meeting.

2. Roles of the Curriculum Subcommittee

The purposes of the subcommittee were discussed and defined as follows:

    • To serve as an advisory group to the Counseling Instructional Council.
    • To provide a systematic review of CPD, CWE, BHS, and PGR courses.
    • To provide leadership in the development of new counseling courses.
    • To assist counselors with the development of new counseling courses as part of the curriculum approval process.
    • To act as a liaison between CIC and other curriculum groups.
    • To sponsor workshops on teaching and learning processes.

 3. Responsibilities of Subcommittee Members

Cori Wright agreed to serve as the liaison between the subcommittee and CIC.  If Joseph Bednorz attends CIC as a replacement for Bruce Thomas this semester, he will also act as a liaison between the two groups.  Josephís assignments are still being discussed with his chair.

Meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month at the District Office.  No meeting will be held in January.  The responsibility for taking minutes will be shared by subcommittee members.

4. Planning for 1999-2000

In relation to the role of the Counseling Curriculum Subcommittee, members generated ideas for work tasks.  These include:  1) To initiate dialogue with representatives from University of Arizona regarding CPD courses meeting their criteria for elective credit  2) To identify existing counseling courses that have not been examined since 1995 and initiate a review process for selected courses, 3) To identify a block of CPD courses that can be packaged and marketed to target populations seeking personal growth.  4) To develop recommendations for consideration by CIC on the delivery of counseling courses via the Internet,  and 5) To participate in curriculum training so subcommittee members can effectively assist counselors developing new courses.

These tasks will become part of a work plan document in which supporting activities, responsible persons, required resources, and timelines are identified.
