Juliane Roybal decided to take a proactive approach to obtain her current position as the Coordinator of Technology Development and Training at Glendale Community College.
Juliane began her career at Maricopa in a One Semester Only position at CGCC as an Audio/Visual Technician nine years ago. She then became a board approved employee in the same position at Phoenix College. While working at PC, Juliane went back to school and received her Masters in Educational Technology. With the assistance and support of her supervisor, she was provided the opportunity to participate in the Creative Pathways Internship Program on a full-time basis for six months in Phoenix College's Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology.
Juliane worked with Julie Magadan and was able to conduct training classes, work with faculty to assist them with their online classes.
She also worked with various online software programs such as Blackboard, Respondus, Lesson Builder, Adobe Presenter 7 and got involved in a One Maricopa initiative at CGCC working alongside Mary McGlasson, Linda Zehr, and Julie Magadan on the Web 2.0 series, which won the campus Innovation of the Year Award at CGCC.
At the time Juliane began her creative pathways internship, she came up with a plan that would give her the experience she needed to obtain a new position in the District within a year.
As a result of her experience in the Center for Teaching/Learning and Technology, Juliane applied for the position she currently holds at GCC. She attributes her ability to be successful in getting her new position to the experience she gained while in her internship. In her words, “I would not have met the minimum qualifications, if I had not participated in the Creative Pathways Program". While at GCC, Juliane recently participated in the StrengthsQuest Assessment and has found that current position allows her to use her strengths (Communicator, Includer, Positivity, Futuristic and Woo). She has also obtained an adjunct faculty position at CGCC enabling her to utilize her own experiences with technology. Her experience teaching for CGCC helps her relate to faculty she assists at GCC.
Her advice to anyone seeking an internship is: Go for it! The hardest part is taking the first step. Remember your future is in your hands, put a plan in place and follow your dreams.

These are two examples out of over 30 organizations that can provide you with a service learning project.
Rosa Ibarra, Financial Aid Technician III at Chandler-Gilbert Community College decided she wanted to gain some insight as to what made potential students successful in their day-to-day studies. Through the Maricopa Learns Through Service Program, Rosa gained some new insight by participating in a service learning project at the San Tan Learning Center located in Gilbert. Rosa spoke to Mr. Kristofer Sippel, Principal at the school and asked if she could work with students just starting on their educational path.
Rosa was paired with a teacher and worked in enhancing her cultural awareness of the various students in the classroom, how to be more creative in her approach to work and what types of events motivated the students daily. She was also able to improve her communication skills.
As part of the Maricopa Learns Through Service program, Rosa was able to do this for an average of 6 hours per month during the Spring semester.

This past spring a survey on mentorship was distributed to all MAT and PSA employees. We had a significant amount of respondents to the survey. The results indicated employees were interested in a district wide mentoring program that was both an informal/formal program.
As a result, a pilot group has just been established made up of some of the respondents to the survey and will continue their relationships throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. This program is unique in that mentors and mentees will be able to establish their mentoring relationships according to what works best for them regarding meeting times, length of the relationship according to the goals set by the mentee.
A workshop entitled, Building a Successful Mentoring Relationship was offered to both mentors and mentees at the inception of this program. This course along with other workshops will be available via our Spring semester schedule for those employees wishing to participate in any type of mentoring relationship in the near future.
