Description of Agency: ASKT is dedicated to breaking the cycle of illiteracy and poverty by providing free of charge, one-on-one volunteer literacy tutoring to second- and third-grade students struggling to master basic reading skills. We work with kids in the libraries of our partner schools around the Valley.
Responsibilities: Help students become successful readers by working one-on-one for 90 minutes a week, throughout the school year. Read, write, and play literacy games with students. Inspire self-confidence and a love of reading. Qualifications: Complete an application with references. Have reliable transportation to and from tutoring weekly.
Special Conditions or Requirements: Fingerprinting and background checks.
Training: Attend a two-hour introductory Tutor Training session to learn reading strategies and techniques to help students improve phonics, comprehension, vocabulary and fluency skills.

Description of Agency: The Arizona Science Center is a non-profit institution that provides an interactive scientific learning experience.

Description of Agency: Hacienda Intermediate Care Facility offers a variety of programs to children and young adults with special needs. These programs include a long term Residential Care Program providing a home for chronically ill children and young adults, a Hospital-to-Home Transition Program, and a Respite Care Program. These children come to us for a variety of reasons such as near drowning, automobile accidents, disease such as cerebral palsy, and abuse.
Volunteer Responsibilities: We need volunteers to interact with our residents. This would include reading to residents, assisting with arts and crafts, rock babies, and play games. Volunteers also have the opportunity to participate in our monthly wheelchair washes, which are held on the third Saturday of every month.
Volunteer Qualifications: Anyone can be qualified to volunteer as long as they are over the age of ten.
Special Requirements or Conditions: There are four requirements for volunteers. All necessary forms will be given to the volunteer.
Training: All volunteers will be trained on how to wash your hands.

Description of Agency: STARS is a private, not for profit agency serving adults with disabilities. The majority of the individuals served are diagnosed as having developmental disabilities. The next most frequent type of disability diagnosis of those served is that of Traumatic Brain Injury. STARS also works with people having psychiatric diagnoses and sensory challenges. STARS provides two main types of day services. One is called Day Treatment and Training. This program focuses on teaching functional activities of daily living. Learning domains include communication skills (verbal, sign, gesture), self-help skills (grooming, hygiene, first aid), consumer awareness (shopping, money management), cooking, arts and leisure activities. Part of the program consists of community outings to learn about and experience resources available to everyone. These range from restaurants and museums to retail stores, police and emergency services, parks, and government offices.
The other types of day service offered are the Employment-Related programs. STARS has both facility based and community-based services. These programs are geared to helping people with no prior work experience learn the skills necessary for successful employment in entry-level positions. In the facility based work centers, individuals are taught work habits (punctuality, grooming, dealing with coworkers and supervisors), work attitudes (meaning of work, accepting change, dealing with corrections), and work skills (speed, accuracy, flexibility, ability to retain information, complete multiple step tasks). Paid work is provided as a training tool to promote the learning.
Community-based services include training as part of a work crew at a community employer. A group of up to eight individuals, with a STARS trainer, work at an actual company fulfilling the responsibilities of paid employees for that company. In addition, STARS offers job development and placement services, transportation training so the individual can get to work as independently as possible, and a service typically called "job coaching", or on the job periodic support to employed individuals to assist them in keeping their jobs.
STARS also provides a supported independent living program. This residentially based program provides a supported living environment for up to eighteen men and women. At the residence, they are provided training in various activities of daily living including cleaning, shopping, cooking, laundry and clothing care, money management, and recreational and leisure activities.
Qualifications:
Training: Prior to being placed in a specific program, volunteers receive training on some disability related issues, confidentiality, abuse and neglect, and STARS. In addition, the program to which the person is assigned will have specific orientation to the people in that program, MSDS, and reporting requirements. Training takes about 8 hours.
Hours: Volunteers have the option of selecting which program they feel they would be most interested in working. Individuals attend the DTA and the facility-based work programs between 8:30am and 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. Volunteer hours at the residential program are from 3pm to 9pm Monday through Friday, and 7am to 9pm on Saturday and Sunday.
