Strategies for working with young children who have handicaps and disabilities in the preschool setting. Types of disabilities, assessment techniques, programming skills and activity design, types of programs, and working with families.

1. Describe the historic and current public policies, attitudes, and programs in early childhood education for exceptional children. (I)
2. Identify specific areas of exceptional functioning in young children, including learning and exceptionalities, sensory and communication disorders, social and emotional problems, and physical and health related disorders. (II)
3. Assess preschool children with special needs. (III)
4. Design and implements an Individual Educational Plan (IEP). (IV)
5. Design a task analysis for each functional area. (VI)
6. Develop curriculum activities appropriate for the special needs child in the preschool setting. (VII)
7. Identify local programs and resources for young exceptional children and their families. (V)
8. Identify needs of families of special needs children. (VIII)
