Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers: Intermediate
An interactive, scenario-based course designed for certified EMTs(Emergency medical technicians) who practice in the field. Enables providers to perform a rapid assessment of sick and injured children in variety of circumstances. Includes use of pediatric assessment triangle, developmental differences, injury prevention, airway management techniques, intravenous and intraosseous access and monitoring, recognition of medical emergencies, pediatric trauma and mechanism of injury, submersion events, children with special health care needs, child abuse and neglect, child and family interactions, use of specialized equipment, documentation of signs, symptoms, care and transportation, special issues in pediatric transportation. Treatment to children is in accordance with recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Prerequisites: EMT at any level of certification and current employment as an EMT at any level, or permission of instructor.

1. Apply pediatric assessment triangle in rapid assessment of ill and injured patients (I)
2. Describe components of Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) and its role in injury prevention (II)
3. Apply airway adjunct devices noting the percentage of oxygen delivered to patient. (III)
4. Remove a foreign body airway obstruction using basic and advanced techniques according to level of certification. (III)
5. Use techniques of intravenous (IV) and intraosseous access and IV monitoring. (IV)
6. Manage and document pediatric medical emergencies to include application of automated defibrillation for specific age groups. (V)
7. Apply the principles of the basic pediatric toxidromes. (VI)
8. Manage and document care of pediatric trauma patient including identification of mechanism of injury, triage / transport decision, and spinal immobilizaiton. (VII)
9. Review approaches to managing and documenting a submersion event. (VIII)
10. Identify the characteristics of children with special needs. (IX)
11. Initiate care, transport, and complete documentation for children who require specialized pediatric equipment and/or technological support. (X)
12. Identify signs of child abuse and neglect. (X)
13. Apply interview, approach, and care techniques in the instance of suspected child abuse and neglect. (X)
14. Use resources, reporting, and documentation in the instance of suspected abuse and neglect. (X)
15. Identify the components of medical-legal considerations affecting the care of children including do-not-resuscitate orders, advanced directives, and consent issues. (XI)
16. Complete written exam with no less than 80% proficiency and skills evaluation at 100% proficiency. (I – XII) Course Outline:
