Intermediate Emergency Medical Technology

Designed to meet U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) Arizona Department of Health Services (A-DHS) Office of Emergency Medical Services (O-EMS) requirements for EMT- Intermediate. Provides advanced knowledge and skills related to hypoperfusion states, respiratory arrest or insufficiency, seizure states, cardiovascular emergencies, unconscious states of undetermined etiology, head injury with altered levels of consciousness, and chest trauma. Prerequisites: (MAT102 or equivalent or a satisfactory score on an applicable district placement exam) and ENG101, BIO160, EMT235, EMT236, EMT/FSC238, twenty-four hour Hazardous Materials Operations Level class or equivalent, and current course in American Heart Association Health Care provider or equivalent. Comprehensive written, oral, and practical evaluation on all prerequisite courses required prior to selection for this course. Valid Arizona Certification and be employed as an EMT for one full calendar year prior to registration in this course. Corequisites: EMT208AA.

Intermediate Emergency Medical Technology

 

1.

Describe the scope of the duties of the intermediate emergency medical technician (I-EMT). (I)

2.

Perform the initial, focused, and continuing processes of assessment, detailed and focused medical history, detailed physical exam, vital signs, communications and documentation. (II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV XV)

3.

Identify patient signs and symptoms of the patient's presenting problem to the physician and/or preceptor in a comprehensive and orderly fashion. (II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV)

4.

Observe the physician/preceptor interview and assess patients; analyze the systematic approach the physician and/or preceptor, and discuss with the physician/preceptor methodology for patients from different age groups and with various chief complaints. 5.

Comprehensively report treatment and response of patients to the physician and/or preceptor. (II)

6.

Perform biotelemetry and telephone communications with medical direction. (II)

7.

Applies core knowledge to processes of critical thinking to provide a differential diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and injuries. (II)

8.

Demonstrate knowledge and use of protocol, standards and guidelines related to patient care. (II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI)

9.

Recognize and apply the procedures of identify and treating shock. (III)

11.

Identify medications being administered and correctly identify to the physician and/or preceptor the indications, contraindications, side effects and dosages according to physician direction or standing orders. (III, IV)

12.

Administer and document the delivery of medications using oral, rectal, tracheal, intraosseus and parenteral routes. (III, IV)

13.

Identify, treat, and document infiltration and discontinuing intravenous (IV) lines. (III, IV)

14.

Perform the functions of a team leader in a variety or pre- hospital emergency situations. (III, IV, V, VI, VII, VII, VIII IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI)

15.

Obtain and document blood samples taken on any patient requiring the procedure. (IV)

16.

Under direct supervision of the preceptor perform inspection and restocking procedures for the drug box and all equipment. (IV)

17.

Identify and treat respiratory emergencies in any age group. (V)

18.

Identify and treat cardiovascular emergencies in any age group. (VI)

19.

Identify specific arrhythmias and relate patient implications and anticipated treatment modalities. (VI)

20.

Perform defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion and transcutaneous pacing in accordance with established standards and guidelines. (VI)

21.

Identify and treat central nervous system emergencies in any age group. (VII)

22.

Identify and treat soft tissue injuries in any age group. (VIII)

23.

Identify and treat musculoskeletal emergencies in any age group. (IX)

24.

Identify and treat medical emergencies in any age group. (X)

25.

Perform insertion and maintenance of nasogastric tubes and any catheters and identify complications in their use. (X)

26.

Identify and treat obstetric and gynecologic emergencies in any age group. (XI)

Perform unique procedures for transporting pediatric and neonatal patients. (XII)

Identify and treat behavioral emergencies in any age group. (XIV)

29.

Performs an evaluation of clinical and vehicular preceptors. (XV)
