Equine Management

Hands-on practice sessions devoted to good horsekeeping skills. Includes assessment of vital signs, methods of restraint, intramuscular injections, oral medications, leg wraps, leg sweats and poultice applications, body clipping and fitting sheets and blankets.
Prerequisites: (EQS105 and EQS145), or permission of department.

Demonstrate proper methods to halter, lead and pick up feet. (I)

Identify and demonstrate common methods of restraint. (II)

3.

Detect and analyze equine temperature, pulse, and respiration. (III)

Identify and demonstrate appropriate clipping and trimming techniques. (IV)

5.

Analyze mane problem areas and demonstrate proper shortening methods. (V)

6.

Analyze equine tail problems and implement corrective measures.(VI)

7.

Apply basic types of equine leg wraps as the situation dictates. (VII)

8.

Apply leg sweat and/or poultice to leg injuries. (VIII)

9.

Identify and demonstrate appropriate methods of sheath cleaning and hygienic mare care. IX)

10.

Identify and demonstrate proper fitting of horse sheets and blankets. (X)

11.

Use proper techniques for administering intramuscular injections. (XI)

12.

Use proper techniques for administering oral medications. (XII)
