Interactive Basic EMT Refresher
Designed to contribute to Arizona Department of Health Services recertification requirements for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) according to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) EMT-Basic National Curriculum and the Arizona Basic EMT Refresher Curriculum Guidelines. Enhances the knowledge base of the EMT. Updates a wide variety of subjects including respiratory and cardiac emergencies, and interaction with advanced life support providers. Prerequisites: (Current EMT Basic certification in the state of Arizona or proof of current registry with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians [NREMT]) and validation in Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider/Professional Rescuer.

1. Describe the scope of practice of the EMT-Basic under the revised US DOT and Arizona curricula. (I)
2. Describe methods of body substance isolation (BSI) practices in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards, with specific attention to equipment concerns and personal protective equipment and clothing. (II)
3. Perform initial and ongoing patient assessment techniques, including detailed patient history. (III)
4. Perform a detailed physical examination and document findings. (III)
5. Identify the variations in techniques of patient assessment for conscious and unresponsive patients. (III)
6. Describe the role, care, and responsibilities of the EMT in suspected sudden infant death syndrome. (IV)
7. Correctly choose and use mechanical aids for breathing to include airway adjuncts, small volume nebulizers, and inhalers. (V)
8. Correctly apply and use an automated external defibrillator. (VI)
9. Identify the indications and side effects of nitroglycerin, subcutaneous epinephrine, inhalers, oral glucose, and activated charcoal. (VII)
10. Describe the protocols for facilitating prescribed patient medication. (VII)
11. Identify the steps in monitoring intravenous (IV) lines. (VIII)
12. Identify and describe the types of analgesic pumps, operations, and drugs used with the analgesic pumps, and EMT basic interventions. (VIII)
13. Successfully complete basic life support skills for adult, pediatric, and infant victims, and automated defibrillation, IV, and blood glucose monitoring. (IX)
14. Successfully complete EMT immobilization skills. (X)
15. Successfully complete the Arizona Department of Health Services (A-DHS) and the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (B-EMS) approved written examination with 75 percent accuracy. (X)
16. Successfully complete a skills examination on National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Skills Sheet. (X)
