Equine Health and Disease Management
Aspects of equine health and disease prevention. Emphasis on preventive maintenance. Preventive medicine and necessary managerial practices needed to keep the equine athlete, broodmare, or family horse in good health. Prerequisites: (EQS105 and EQS120) or department approval.

2. Identify and describe common dental problems and abnormalities of the equine (I)
3. Age an equine by dental eruption and dentition. (I)
4. Identify, describe, and recognize infectious and non- infectious diseases, their clinical signs, treatment options and prognosis. (II-IV)
5. Identify and describe common environmental factors which may cause health problems. (II-V)
6. Identify and describe common internal and external parasites and describe the symptoms they produce. (V)
7. Describe parasite control through management and anthelmintics. (V)
8. Develop effective worming and vaccination schedules. (V)

11. Describe the pathogenesis of Navicular Disease and the related foot problems which are differentials and identify and describe common methods of treatment. (IX)
12. Identify and describe major types of fore and hind limb lameness and indicate how they relate to usability. (X)
13. Identify and describe the major factors responsible for laminitis and outline methods for its prevention and treatment. (XI)
14. Identify and describe the normal reproductive patterns of the mare and the stallion. (XII)
15. Identify and describe normal foaling behavior and presentation, and outline procedures for the proper care of the neonate. (XIII)
