Light Horse Management

Hands-on practice sessions devoted to good horsekeeping skills. Includes mane and tail care; pulling and braiding; clipping techniques; types of leg bandages; determining temperature, pulse, and respiration; and tying of horseman's knots. Prerequisites: None.

Light Horse Management

 

1.

Detect and analyze equine temperature, pulse, and respiration. (I)

2.

Apply basic types of equine leg wraps as the situation dictates. (II)

3.

Analyze mane problem areas and demonstrate proper pulling and braiding methods as dictated by various breed standards. (III)

4.

Analyze equine tail problems and implement corrective methods via proper tail pulling techniques. (IV)

5.

Properly clip a horse according to need or situation. (V)

6.

Analyze equine hoof problems, implement corrective measures, and prepare feet for show or sale. (VI)

7.

Implement the use of proper horse clothes, including blankets, sheets, and turn-out equipment. (VII)

8.

Identify the need for, and demonstrate the ability to tie commonly used horseman's knots. (VIII)
