1. Evaluate and demonstrate proper saddling techniques and fit of basic Western equipment. (I)
2. Identify and properly apply various types of protective leg wraps and boots. (II)
3. Properly fit and adjust various bits and other types of Western equipment. (I,III)
4. Explain and demonstrate the methods used to safely mount and dismount a horse. (IV)
5. Analyze and demonstrate the correct use of the three basic gaits. (V)
6. Identify and demonstrate smooth transitions and properly execute a simple change of lead. (V)
7. Demonstrate shortening and lengthening of stride. (VI)
8. Analyze and demonstrate lateral flexion and the two track maneuver. (VI)
9. Analyze riding methods needed to negotiate trail obstacles and demonstrate use of trail obstacles as a means of improving attentiveness of the horse. (VII)
10. Identify and demonstrate the elements of a Western riding pattern. (VIII)
11. Review and explain American Horse Show Association rules and regulations governing Trail and Western Riding. (IX)
