Equine Management

Hands-on practice sessions devoted to good horsekeeping skills. Includes temperature, pulse, respiration, methods of restraint. Examines intramuscular injections, oral medications, emergency first aid, exercise management and alternative healing therapy. Prerequisites: (EQS105 and EQS145), or permission of department.

Equine Management

 

1.

Demonstrate proper methods of haltering, leading and picking up feet. (I)

2.

Identify and demonstrate common methods of restraint. (II)

3.

Detect and analyze equine temperature, pulse, and respiration. (III)

4.

Identify and demonstrate appropriate clipping and trimming techniques. (IV)

5.

Analyze mane problem areas and demonstrate proper pulling and braiding methods as dictated by various breed standards. (V)

6.

Analyze equine tail problems and implement corrective methods via proper tail pulling or trimming techniques. (VI)

7.

Apply basic types of equine leg wraps as the situation dictates. (VII)

8.

Identify and demonstrate appropriate methods of sheath cleaning and hygienic mare care. (VIII)

9.

Implement the use of proper horse clothes, including blankets, sheets, and turn-out equipment. (IX)

10.

Use proper techniques for administering intramuscular injections. (X)

11.

Use proper techniques for administering oral medications. (XI)

12.

Identify and describe common types of alternative healing therapies used for horses. (XII)
