General Industry Workplace Safety
Hazard recognition, reduction and accident prevention in workplace environments. Basic overview of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) agency safety laws and record keeping requirements. Chemical and materials handling, ergonomic priorities, electrical safety, machine safety, safety requirements, planning and response to natural/man- made emergencies. Personal protective equipment, safety labels/signage, confined spaces, walking/working surfaces, management and employee responsibilities. Prerequisites: None.

1. Compare the roles and responsibilities related to safety compliance between OSHA, employer and employee. (I)
2. Explain the impact of federal regulations on safety/health concerns and hazard avoidance in the work place. (I)
3. Describe building and facility features, and the construction and maintenance of each, including floors and stairways, working surfaces, and structural egress paths from a safety and health standpoint. (II)
4. Identify safety compliance relationships, responsibilities, and record keeping requirements between employer and contractors or temporary employees. (II)
5. Describe safe handling, labeling, transportation and storage procedures for hazardous materials.
6. Describe the meaning, uses, and purpose of selected safety colors and signs. (III)
7. List specific conditions that indicate the potential health and safety hazards. (IV)
8. Discuss the points that should be included in a fire prevention plan. (IV)
9. State the correct rack, bulk, or palletized storage procedures for selected non-hazardous materials. (V)
10. Demonstrate the correct procedures for safe mechanical and manual handling of selected non-hazardous materials of varying weights and shapes. (V)
11. Recognize safety precautions for welding use and work zone considerations. (VI)
12. Describe the various steps required for machine and tool guarding, including point of operation, power transmission apparatus, saws, abrasive wheel machinery, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment and powered and non-powered hand tools. (VI)
13. Identify safety devices and procedures to reduce the possibility of an electrical accident. (VII)
14. Identify the priorities of action response in hazard mitigation and the role of personal protective equipment to assist with personal safety responsibilities. (VIII)
