Introduction to the techniques, electronics, and tools used to perform basic recording studio, live sound, and electronic musical instrument equipment maintenance.
Prerequisites: MUC195AA, or MUC111, or permission of instructor.

1. Apply basic principles of electronics to troubleshoot audio- related electronics equipment like audio mixing consoles, speakers, microphones, musical instruments, and digital audio recording system components. (I, II)
2. Perform minor repairs on demonstration materials and on instructor-approved projects on campus recording studio, live sound, and DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) equipment. (II)
3. Utilize testing and measuring devices such as multi-meters and oscilloscopes, hand tools, and correct soldering techniques for recording studio components. (II)
4. Identify and apply proper cleaning techniques to maintain professional aesthetics of the recording studio work environment. (I, II)

    I. Technical Instruction:
        A. Measurement devices used to troubleshoot and test audio- related equipment
        B. Circuit schematics designed for audio applications
        C. Basic electrical principles applicable to recording studio components:
          1. Ohm's Law
          2. DC and AC circuit theory
          3. Vacuum tube theory
          4. Solid state theory
        D. Professional cleaning techniques appropriate for recording studios
      II. Applications:
          A. Clean and maintain campus recording studios, digital audio workstation labs, and live sound equipment as needed:
            1. Mixing consoles
            2. Speakers
            3. Amplifiers
            4. Outboard equipment like reverbs, delays, compressors, microphone preamps, tape machines, cd recorders, patch bays,

          B. Instrument cable, microphone cable, and patch bay cable repair
          C. Apply Ohm's law to solve for resistance and capacitance to troubleshoot problems and failure of audio-related devices and their components
          D. Create basic schematics to build projects like transducers (microphones), effects pedals (distortion, phase shifter, and ring modulator for example), and speakers
          E. Professional soldering techniques
