Diversity Coordinators Propose
Shared Definitions
Maricopa's diversity coordinators are committed to the district's goal of diversity and inclusiveness and worked together this past year to identify how to best use the strength of the group to further the goal of diversity/inclusiveness at their colleges or sites and district wide.
Moving forward into 2006 2007, the committee's overarching goal is to "increase awareness of diversity on all campuses." They want a consistent message across Maricopa so that people understand that:
Diversity refers to the individual and group/social differences that exist among people.
Inclusion is the active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity with which individuals connect.
All activities will ultimately address the vision that diversity plus inclusion equals excellence in student learning.
What is the role of a diversity coordinator?
Each Maricopa College has a designated diversity coordinator. The coordinators work from a large menu of possible responsibilities that include:
- Representing their colleges/sites at DAC meetings.
- Participating on their college/site diversity committee.
- Being a voice for diversity at their college/site.
- Facilitating diversity related events at their college/site.
- Gathering information and data at their college/site.
