Faculty of Color Recruitment and Retention Committee

In the fall 2004, the Maricopa Faculty Association, in conjunction with district’s Human Resources Department, the Chancellor’s Executive Council (CEC), and the Vice Presidents of Academic Affairs (VPAA) Council began discussions regarding strategic and joint efforts in the recruitment, hiring and retention of faculty of color. Recognizing the challenges of ten colleges having similar goals, but often conflicting efforts, the Chancellor with several faculty and administrators identified that, as a district, Maricopa, could be more proactive in its faculty outreach, recruitment and retention efforts. What has emerged as a result of those earlier conversations is the creation of the Faculty of Color Recruitment and Retention Committee (FCRRC). The FCRRC is a faculty-driven committee that was formed as a district wide initiative supported by the Chancellor, the CEC and the FEC. The Human Resource and Academic Affairs Departments at the District Office also play key roles in its support of the FCRRC in its desire to recruit and retain faculty of color.

Among the goals of the FCRRC was creating a new faculty recruitment coordinator position for the Maricopa Community Colleges. This role would facilitate collaboration between district and individual college efforts. In addition, the Faculty Recruitment Coordinator collaborates with the FCRRC, offices of the VCs of Human Resources and Academic Affairs to identify, design and implement short and long term faculty outreach and recruitment goals and strategies. In January 2006, Stephanie J. Fujii, EMCC counseling faculty since 1996, began a two and a half year reassignment as the first Faculty Recruitment Coordinator.

The FCRRC is comprised of a faculty member from each of the colleges, two Vice Presidents of Academic Affairs, the Vice Chancellor of Human Resources, an FEC representative that can be one of the faculty members of a college, and the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs.
