DAC Award for Excellence: Maricopa Skill Center

Cosmetology Program

Maricopa Skill Center Cosmetology ProgramThe Maricopa Skill Center Cosmetology Program is successful because of its commitment to diversity and inclusion. A commitment to Diversity helps attract and retain both students and clients. The Maricopa Skill Center Cosmetology Program attracts all cultures and nationalities as students, and the program derives a large percentage of its client base from students from the other programs offered at MSC.

Developing a clientele is the most important goal in cosmetology and it is difficult to achieve. If you are diversified in your skills and abilities, your clientele base will be much larger and easier to obtain because you can successfully perform more services.

Maricopa Skill Center Cosmetology Program

Diversity and inclusion are incorporated into the Cosmetology curriculum through:

  • Recognition that all students need a positive learning environment with respect for all and fair school policies
  • Training in all hair types and hair services, corresponding with Cosmetology State Board licensing.
  • Education on the history of cosmetology which teaches the beginning of the art form from all different nationalities and cultures from ancient times to present day
  • Development of a calendar of activities that acknowledges the diverse backgrounds of MSC Cosmetology students
  • Life Skills and Professional Development training to prepare students for living and working in a complicated and diverse world
  • Social responsibility through participation with non-profit organizations assisting hospitals, homeless shelters and nursing homes

The Maricopa Skill Center Cosmetology Program and the school affirms the value and self worth of all students. Cosmetology creates a climate where people feel that their backgrounds and lifestyles do not affect others’ perception of them as professionals or affect their opportunities for employment.

Student growth has increased in Cosmetology in both the enrollment and clinic services. Clinic students have successfully serviced a diverse clientele which has returned for additional services. The Cosmetology Program enrollment has increased due to our commitment to diversity.

Our students feel comfortable, accepted and confident that they can achieve their goals in the beauty industry. Cosmetology is a mosaic of women and men of varied backgrounds, races, religion, ages and sexual orientation. We value each others’ differences and treat one another fairly and with respect. Our workplace reflects the diversity of our students, clients, instructors and the community and the unique talent and leadership skills that are found here.
