Maricopa Community Colleges

From the Editor

Welcome to the Spring 2008 Edition of Expressions, Maricopa’s vehicle to inform the community about its diversity and inclusion initiatives. I hope you enjoy our guest leadership column. Dr. Maria Hesse read the article and shared it with the Diversity Advisory Council. The message that Dr. Rao provided resonates for us here at Maricopa. We are grateful to Dr. Rao for permitting us to share it with all of you.

You'll see connections between his message about creating inclusive climates and that of Dr. Steve Robbins who was this spring's Leadership Breakfast speaker. Whether we call it Microagressions or Unintentional Intolerance, we are reminded that we are continuously learning and that even when we don't mean it (intent), we may be causing harm (impact). It is up to all of us to be more mindful in our relationships with each other to create an environment where we can all perform at our best.

The spotlight article on the MCBAA picnic and the Professional Growth Days provide us with models for our inclusive best. DAC recognizes the importance of continuous learning and improvement to being our personal best. The article about professional development provides context in terms of learning, leadership and diversity (and is a shameless plug for some of the excellent training that Maricopa provides.)

Please take time to read about this year's awardees of the annual DAC Awards of Excellence. Each college once again recognized the intentional efforts of faculty and staff that link inclusiveness and student success. The range of roles, departments and arenas that were recognized affirm that diversity and inclusiveness are central to our work and not off to the side.

Have a great summer! Congratulations to our graduates and to everyone who contributes to their success!!!
