Maricopa Community Colleges

Welcome to the Fall 2009 Expressions newsletter.  Thank you to Dr. Pan for clarifying the connection of diversity and inclusion to student success. It is really important to recognize how effectively managing in diverse environments enhances critical thinking skills as well as providing our future workforce with the skills they need to successfully interact with employees. Maricopa Skill Center mandatory "soft skills" program reinforces the fact that it is often our people skills that make the difference in job retention, advancement and satisfaction.

This month we also look at the Americans with Disabilities Amendment Act of 2008. It is really important for all of us to know how the approach to the ADA has changed with this amendment. It may impact us as supervisors, employees or as friends and family members. Take the time to read about this.

Congratulations to Stella Torres for receiving the Valle Del Sol award for exemplary leadership. It is wonderful to see one of our own recognized for her contributions to the community.

And thank you to Janet Felton for her continuing service to the Diversity Advisory Council and her thoughtful reflections about her experience as Diversity Coordinator Chair.

Finally, the articles about the Leadership Summit and Remembering Who is in the Room address the culture of Maricopa -- a culture of inclusion and collaboration. Both of these efforts require work and care to be successful. The outcome for us as employees and for our students is worth it.
