Hiring the Best! at Maricopa

Dr. Rufus Glasper says, "Being part of a search committee at Maricopa is an important responsibility and a great opportunity. Maricopa is counting on you to Hire the Best!" Maricopa employees serving on search committees now have the opportunity to prepare as they go about this very important responsibility.

Hiring the Best! for Maricopa is a new training program sponsored jointly by Employee Services and Employee and Organizational Learning and developed with input from faculty, staff, and administrators involved in the search committee process. The workshop was tested extensively in focus groups with college HR representatives and employee group leaders. Designed to be highly interactive, this workshop includes screening and interviewing scenarios based on actual MCCCD situations. One participant noted, "The examples were 'meaty' so that we were able to touch upon an array of issues that might come up."

Each participant receives a binder "packed with useful information" including a CD portal with links to search committee resources, policies, procedures, sample forms, job descriptions, and a competency-based question bank. In addition, the course provides live access to District and college HR experts who are available during the class to answer specific questions. One participant wrote, "I liked having HR reps in the training for difficult questions - having the trainer in the front and HR in the back gave a VERY comfortable and interactive session."

One faculty member who attended a recent training wrote, "I was able to arrange my schedule to attend yesterday's "Hire the Best" workshop and feel it was well worth it. So worth it, in fact, that I would urge each of you to rearrange your schedules in order to attend the session." Faculty have the added bonus of receiving 5.5 hours of faculty professional growth non-academic advancement credit.
