Talent Management at Maricopa
Contributed by Josh Mackey, Talent Management
Talent Management is a system-wide initiative directly addressing the district’s strategic direction to recruit, develop and retain a quality diverse workforce. Underlying assumptions from day one of the initiative have included valuing our employees, nurturing and growing our own employees, building a pipeline for the future, beginning at the system level, ensuring employee group equity, a commitment to diversity, building on existing systems and processes, and inclusiveness.
The first programs from Talent Management are the Executive Development Program which started last Fall and the Leadership Advancement Pilot planned to kick-off this Spring. It is natural that some may think of Talent Management only as an employee development program. While these programs are aimed at addressing some key leadership needs and enhance the district’s already broad range of employee development programs across our system, employee development is just one element of MCCCD’s Talent Management scope. It is important to keep in mind that MCCCD’s Talent Management model is made up of four major strategic components: (1) Employee Recruitment, (2) Employee Selection, (3) Employee Development, and (4) Employee Retention.
(See large scale model at link below.)
The financial realities our district is facing shine the spotlight on our need to become more strategic and effective in maximizing our internal talent as well as continuing to seize those instances when it is advantageous to bring in new skills and diverse perspectives from outside the organization.
Our 2009 Talent Management focus will shift to the Employee Retention and Employee Selection components including examining barriers to internal mobility (between locations, between policy groups, etc.).
This is in response to:
- The district’s need to be more nimble and to have more options in terms of selecting and deploying talent across the organization
- Feedback we have received from employee and constituency groups.
These types of efforts should benefit our system at all levels and enhance our ability to provide the quality instruction and service our customers expect.
