Psychology and Diversity

During the fall of 1999, the psychology class was involved in a special project to help the students better understand world diversity through the study of different cultures. This project also helped the students develop skills for working as a team. They learned how to research topics and how to share the responsibility of the research.

Group number three was tasked with studying the Polish culture. They uncovered facts that were very surprising to them, having been raised in the American culture. One rarely thinks about what he or she does with their hands. The typical American will use hand gestures while talking to someone, whether in person or even on the phone. However, in Poland the custom is, when sitting at a table, to put one's hands on the table and leave them there, or at one's side. This is just one example of a myriad of very interesting facts about the Polish culture.

Overall, the project was well ordered and highly informative. The purpose of the project, to enlighten students to cultural diversity, was accomplished in an effective way. It was very interesting to learn how different the world is from the American culture.
