NANCY STEIN TO HEAD GOVERNING BOARD
FOR MARICOPA COMMUNITY COLLEGES

January 9, 2002 - Nancy Stein of Scottsdale, marks a decade on the Maricopa Community Colleges Governing Board as its newly elected President. It is the second time Stein will serve a one-year term leading the Board. She served as President in 1997 and as Governing Board Secretary in 1996 and 2001.

Stein says she remains resolute in her role as a student advocate and promises to keep their interests a top priority. "Our success as an institution of higher learning is predicated on the success of our students," says Stein. "We will continue to find innovative ways to teach while upholding the traditional programs that have helped us establish our core strengths." Stein has a history of involvement with education through her many years as a reading and learning disability volunteer teacher and her pursuit of higher education as a re-entry student.

Ed Contreras is the elected Board Secretary. The Chandler resident marks seven years of service with the Maricopa Community Colleges. He was first elected to the Board in 1995, and has served as both secretary and president during his tenure. Contreras is a controller for a non-profit agency and has an extensive public service record.

Both Stein and Contreras were elected to their posts at a public meeting on the evening of January 8, 2002. Stein replaces Dr. Donald Campbell who just completed his fourth term as President during his 19 years on the Board.

In September 1996, the Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board implemented the policy governance model as its method of operation. The governance process allows the Board to more effectively respond to demands from external forces regarding accountability and performance measurement. With the adoption of this model, the Board transferred Administrative Regulation responsibilities to the Chancellor, subject to a formal approval process.

The Maricopa County Community College District is one of the largest community college districts in the nation. It includes 10 colleges - Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Estrella Mountain Community College, GateWay Community College, Glendale Community College, Mesa Community College, Paradise Valley Community College, Phoenix College, Rio Salado College, Scottsdale Community College and South Mountain Community College. The District also includes the Maricopa Skill Center, Southwest Skill Center, several satellite campuses and business/industry, technical and customized training institutes and serves more than a quarter million students annually.
