MORAL CONSCIENCE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE TO BE DISCUSSED AT HONORS FORUM LECTURE – Amnesty International chief visits Phoenix

February 12, 2002 – During periods of war, human rights come to the forefront of social awareness. Yet the Executive Director of Amnesty International, USA, believes human rights are the moral conscience of any community and the struggle to bring awareness to injustices is, sadly, a never-ending battle.

As part of the Maricopa Community Colleges 2001-2002 Honors Forum Lecture Series, Dr. William Schulz will discuss the global struggle for human rights on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at 7:30 p.m., at the Phoenix College Bulpitt Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Schulz is an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister. He has been involved in a wide variety of international and social justice causes and has been outspoken in his opposition to the death penalty and his support for women’s rights, gay and lesbian rights and racial justice. He has organized and participated in demonstrations and written extensively on behalf of all four causes. Schulz also actively campaigns on behalf of the mandates of Amnesty International; to free all prisoners of conscience; ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisoners; abolish the death penalty, torture and other cruel treatment of prisoners; end political killings and "disappearances"; and oppose human rights abuses by opposition groups.

This 2001-2002 Honors Forum Lecture Series is titled “Customs, Traditions and Celebrations: The Human Drive for Community.” The series is a project of the Honors Program at the Maricopa Community Colleges designed to encourage, foster and contribute to a climate of excellence both in the colleges and in the surrounding community.

Bulpitt Auditorium is located in the center of the Phoenix College campus at 1202 W. Thomas Road. For more information on the program, the public may call 480-731-8026.
